From 2020 - present, every summer I have been teaching at the Hilton Head Jazz Camp. This jazz camp is a week-long intensive learning experience. Jazz musicians from all over the U.S. come to teach at the camp and help the students learn about jazz. In this camp I had the responsibility of teaching theory, improvisation, sight reading, and musicality with playing. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. My first job out of college was teaching at a charter school where I saw all the students in the school for 9 week periods.
