At the end of eighth grade I was going to quit but my parents encouraged me to try again. When I entered ninth grade I joined the marching band which was a great experience for me. We had a great band that was directed by a great band director. We played at competitions and won awards. I went on to study music at Montclair State University where I earned a BA in music education. Read More

Throughout my college career, I have learned to teach students rather than babysit students in order to have them achieve their very best. Teaching is the organizing or guiding of a process in which students learn. Teaching is there so students can learn. Babysitting is simply watching the students without them necessarily learning anything. I strongly believemusic teachers should possess a love of music and an enjoyment of working with people. First and foremost, learning any musical instrument should be a fun experience. With this in mind, each person's lesson is subjective and progresses according to the student's learning style; a beginning 5 yr old student's lesson will look much different that a beginning 14 yr old student's lesson. Each student will learn repertoire from a lesson book, solo repertoire and anything else that they may express interest in. As a student progresses, their repertoire will naturally become more challenging . Read More

Practice is ideal for each student. I encourage my students in their practicing. Progress will be made most quickly by those students who maintain the recommended practicing time (1 hour per day). Parents are also encouraged to be involved in their students practice. Taking the time to listen to your child play their weekly songs, or creating a set time for practicing in the students daily routine are good ways to become involved. Read More

Since then I have volunteered for my hometown's summer music enrichment program, and have continued to do one-on-one lessons. Outside of music I very often found myself in teaching scenarios. For several years I instructed WTF Taekwondo, holding a rank of 2nd Dan Black Belt. I also taught and assisted my mother in teaching Sunday school for several years. Throughout my years of teaching experience I've worked with all age ranges and levels of proficiency. Read More

With the trumpet it is extremely important to avoid developing bad habits and to implement proper technique in order for appropriate muscle memory to set in. At any level it is important to ensure that proper technique is understood and implemented. These techniques take a personal touch from a seasoned professional to assess and explain. To further develop a solid foundation of sound fundamentals I work incrementally out of the Arban's Clark technique books. (As well as others) These books cover all aspects of a fundamentally sound trumpet player in an enjoyable way with progressively more challenging exercises. Read More

The best lesson I learned before attending college, my trumpet teacher taught me, "If you sound good while practicing, you're not really practicing", which I make sure to mention multiple times. I never try to overload my students with too much material, but instead try to understand what they would like to learn, and develop lessons and exercises from that. Brass instruments require commitment, and although difficult, playing should seem fun, instead of a chore. Read More
