Instruments: Guitar
Lessons will vary, depending on each student's needs, wants, and capability. I think it's important to consistently accomplish small goals in order to raise one's self esteem and motivation to practice the instrument. I put a strong emphasis on listening, reading, writing, improvisation, and playing with others. Students who are new to the instrument will be introduced to the fundamentals of the guitar. From then on, students will work to set their own goals, ranging from wanting to be to play their favorite Justin Bieber songs, or if diving deep into the world of jazz. Read More

For students who are just starting to learn - I teach them the basics of music and how to properly handle the guitar. It is very important to know your way around the instrument, so I will touch upon basic things such as the parts of a guitar, the names of the strings, how to know where you are on the fretboard, etc. From here I will proceed to develop the student's technique so they feel comfortable enough to begin playing scales and chords. I knew that I wanted to be a teacher before I ever touched a guitar. Growing up in a family of school teachers allowed me to see the broad spectrum of the educaGonal process, from designing lesson plans to filing report cards, and I quickly realized that a teacher doesn’t stop working when the bell rings. Teaching history out of a textbook is one thing...teaching a student to hear the color of an altered dominant chord is a totally different beast. Read More

The way that music theory underlies all of these disciplines will help the intermediate student to gain a more comprehensive understanding of how their instrument and music in general works. I'm also able to teach total beginners, as well as advanced players. For beginners, I start with a book by Hal Leonard, which allows us to slowly master the basic fundamentals of guitar and music. Most beginning students are able to play through their first song within the first month or so of studying with more. Read More

I am a mentor-style teacher. I love to see my students develop their love for music at their own pace, and I will do whatever it takes to help them achieve their goals. I feel that the music teacher/student relationship is something that can transcend music, and so I can be counted on for trustworthiness, reliability, punctuality, and honest encouragement. I also feel that it is critical that the music teacher themselves be a performing musician, and so I try to remain active with various performance projects involving piano and chamber music; this experience helps to benefit the student as well.
