I then continued teaching once in college by volunteering at local high schools helping new students to the band programs learn brass and percussion. I could say the best part while learning was understanding theory...that part of my learning opened up many doors for me musically. While a music student at the University of Iowa, I performed with all three concert bands and two jazz bands as well as playing in orchestral and chamber settings. After graduating from Iowa with a degree in music performance and education, I performed with the Idaho Falls Symphony Orchestra as well as a ska/rock band. During my time at the university, I had the opportunity to broaden my perspective on the trombone by studying with several of the trombone faculty. To me, the key element for a successful learning experience is to engage the student in the lesson and during their individual practice. I have battled with ADHD my whole life and I distinctly remember daydreaming during many of my classes in college, retaining little-to-no information. It is very difficult to engage with a topic as complex as music, but it is crucial to absorb every second.
