I think my teaching philosophy is to help a student develop the proper fundamentals of trumpet playing while working on making music that inspires and moves that student. As someone who has struggled with many aspects of learning to play the trumpet, I believe that I am particularly well-equipped to patiently help students work through similar issues. I think it's of vital importance to practice every day, even just for a short time. Read More

My ultimate goal as an educator is for each student to find their love for trumpet and music making. I push my students to be the best musicians they can, so with each student I create realistic and measurable goals. My approach is very student centered, so I make myself available outside of lessons to clarify or answer any questions the student may come up. I believe that each student learns in their own way, so I develop an educational plan specifically tailored to the students strengths and weaknesses. Read More

I am an incredibly spirited and determined musician and educator who takes great joy in sharing music with as many people as I can. I am currently working on a BME from Indiana University, and while I still have a long way to go, I know full well in my ability to demonstrate my talent as a musician and educator. Performing all over the country has been one in a long list of wonderful and highly impact performances in my time as a musician, and I have played in settings ranging from Lucas Oil Stadium to IU's very own Recital Hall. The approach, overall, is to drive toward the student's goal. When someone wants to learn how to play an instrument well enough to play in a band or orchestra, I usually consider two needs - playing music and interpreting written music. These are basic parts of education, literally easy to define by achieving pages in etude books. In addition, though, there is a third component to meeting the set goal: writing music - a sensibility that you can create. Read More

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by engaging students in conversations about realistic and individual growth goals. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. Read More

For beginners, I advise them to purchase Essential Elements or another book of equivalent level, and we would be able to work through these basic exercises and melodies so that the student can learn fundamentals. I also ask beginners what song they would like to play, and I would transcribe the notes for them so that we can work towards something they want to achieve in the near future. For players who are intermediate level and above, I think it is important to point out what people do well, and then as a teacher provide feedback on how they can get better. Read More
