My teaching balances improvisation-guided exploration with firm technical training. It is important for students to be excited about discovering new things as well as being encouraged by achieving clearly-defined realistic goals, which we discuss at every lesson. In addition to this balance, I encourage a lot of listening. Music is a 'heard art' and learning to listen attentively is key to musical growth. To this end, listening assignments (and likely additional suggestions!) are usually given in every lesson, determined by the student's interests, area of study, and current focus. Read More

I have been a music educator for seven years in the public school system in Virginia and have been teaching private trumpet lessons for 16 years. My students have achieved on different levels and have been accepted to major music universities along the east coast including JMU, VCU, UVA and Berklee College of Music. I currently teach online lessons out of my home. I am happily married to my wife Lindsay and we have a daughter as well as a dog, who sometimes might make a guest appearance in our lessons! Read More

This was how my first teacher taught me, and I found his methods extremely helpful in my early years. Once they're fundamentals are developed, I will begin to work on the students first recital.
