I use the method created by Adolf Herseth (Principle trumpeter in the Chicago Symphony for 50 years). I learned this method from William Fielder at Rutgers. This concept is based on using air as the primary energy source for producing sound. We will work on strengthening the breathing apparatus to be able to produce a pure clear tone that is without distortion. For beginning woodwind students, I have had success using the Rubank method books as a starter. Alongside a method book, I like to work on material chosen by the student, as well as my own supplemntal exercises. It is important for the student to understand the musical concepts associated with the repertoire, as well as focusing on performing well. I also prefer to have my students keep a practice log book, in order to track their progress. For piano and music theory, I like to use the John Thompson method for beginner students, and the Bastien Piano Literature series for more advanced students. I believe teaching is one of the most important things I can do to 'give back' in music. I've had the great fortune of studying with some of the best trumpet teachers in the world. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with my own method based on fundamental approach to trumpet playing, such as Arban, Maggio, Collin and Clark methods. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Read More

My pedagogy is based on the American jazz tradition and the teachings of Orff and Kodaly. I like to impart a holistic love of music in my students, without boring them with too much history or theory. However, it is my belief that theory and musical literacy will open doors to a greater level of fulfillment and understanding of music as a whole.
