Overview:
Hey all you prospectives out there! I can’t wait to share my love for music and this great instrument with you. I have over 25 years experience playing gigs as a trumpeter, cornetist, pianist, composer, and bandleader (even as a singer once in a while). I started playing in the San Francisco public schools where I was fortunate in having excellent musicians around me and devoted teachers. I went on to University of Iowa initially as an undergrad admit to the Writers Workshop but also kept up with trumpet with David Greenhoe. I gradually began playing more gigs in big bands, theater bands, small jazz groups, in religious services with organ. It was a natural step to move to New York and see how far I could go.
EXPERIENCE
I've had a number of devoted teachers and being in New York there's always a chance to learn something new by simply saying hello to a musician. I look at teaching as sharing information enthusiastically and giving a student a chance to check in about issues they're dealing with relating to the instrument, music in general, and psychology of performance. I'm a student of the directions I was nudged towards by several key teachers. These directions include 20th Century Impressionism, free improvisation in restricted key centers similar to Indian Ragas and 14th Century motets but stylistically free, bebop, free-bop (bebop type melodies with free form solos), and music involving rhythmic interlocking counterpoint (like Afro-Cuban, West African and Brazilian music). I've taught at several music schools in the tri-state area including Music School of Westchester, New York Jazz Academy, and Long Island Conservatory.
METHODS USED
We’ll do studies designed to address your weaknesses as well as draw from your strengths. We’ll also devote some time to playing duets for sake of joy in exuding music! We’ll work to facilitate good, easy vibrations of lips- you'll be surprised how simple an embouchure is: to form a relaxed embouchure (simply ;) say the word 'simple' and place the mouthpiece on the lips; I’ll teach you how playing in different ranges is about directing the air flow with your tongue. We’ll work to develop your overall musicianship including sight-reading, expressiveness of tone, incorporation of dynamics, and ways of shaping a phrase (flexibility is the key to your musical enjoyment). We can structure your lessons to include time with the piano, ear training, chord theory, and improvisation (I can comp for you ).
LESSON STYLE
I want you to be able to relax! And I'll do my best to make sure you are. You are free/ encouraged even to interject questions and make observations along the way. For beginners I introduce the instrument itself, its components and functions, how to care for the instrument, how to hold it and put it safely away in the case. Then we move on to air stream. A steady relaxed air stream surprisingly enough is all you need to produce a tone. Once you've produced a clear and centered in tune tone...how can you not be hooked and want to do more? Now let's Buzz and be happy!

Jake was a great trumpet who is very technical in his instruction. As a beginner to trumpet, I appreciated his wide breadth of knowledge about the instrument and his patience.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
