With beginning students, I start with the fundamentals of the instrument, including embouchure and finger technique, as well as the ability to breathe properly, which is fundamental to playing any wind instrument.  I also introduce beginning students to basic musical concepts, such as reading music, and tailor the musical selection to their tastes or to whatever group they are playing in, most often a school band class.  For more advanced students, I observe what areas the student needs the most work in and tailor the lessons specifically to dealing with those areas, as well as catering to their individual musical tastes. I believe every mind and thus every student is different. So especially when teaching something inherently creative like music, I almost always have to be inventive with my pedagogy. Every student has their own interests, learning style, and goals, and as an educator, listening to and really HEARING those is just step 1. In 2010, I performed in the Eutiner Festspiele in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany as principal horn, performing operas and symphonic works. In 2012 in Prague, Czechia, my chamber group won second prize at the Ameropa International Concertante Competition with Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante for Four Winds in E-flat major, K. 297b. That same summer, I was accepted into the Colorado College Music Festival with full scholarship.
