A native Long Islander, Mr. Curtin is a passionate and dedicated musician who loves sharing the joy and fulfillment of music with as many people as he can. Graduating from The State University of New York at Potsdam's Crane School of Music with a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education in 2010, Mr. Curtin continued his studies and served as a graduate assistant at the University of Louisville, where he earned a Master of Music degree in Trumpet Performance in 2012. While in Louisville, Mr. Curtin enjoyed an active freelance teaching and performing career, serving as a teaching artist in many public and private schools.   A world traveler, Mr. Curtin has performed in over a dozen countries as a leader with the Long Island Youth Orchestra and loves exploring the music of world cultures. Additionally, Mr. Curtin has enjoyed several performances at Carnegie Hall, most recently as Assistant Principal Trumpet of the National Collegiate Wind Ensemble in 2009, under the baton of H. Robert Reynolds.   Since returning to New York in early 2013, Mr. Curtin has enjoyed freelancing and performing in the Greater New York City Area, most frequently as principal trumpet of the Brooklyn Wind Symphony. Working as a classical artists manager by day, Mr. Curtin looks forward to working with and helping students reach their musical goals.

I have devoted my life to making music and sharing my knowledge and expertise with young people.  After graduating from CalArts in 1976 I spent over ten years playing and touring professionaly with a variety of top 40/hard rock bands before becoming a music educator.  I have recently retired after a 26 year career in the NYC and Mount Vernon public schools. Together with my wife Michelle I enjoy playing & performing singer/songwriter, soft rock & Broadway material. Teaching private lessons gives me the opportunity to pass along my knowledge & experience to many youthful successors.

For beginning band/instrumental students, I normally begin with the Accent on Achievement Method Book 1. There are many similar books, but I enjoy this one because it's colorful and it isn't something that's intimidating for the kids to look at. Some books can look overwhelming for kids who are just beginning. For beginning piano students, I typically start with John W. Schuam's Piano Course: Pre-A (AKA "The Green Book) and John Thompson's "Note Speller" (AKA "The Red Book"). I do ask for all of my students to have a small manuscript book as well for notes and other exercises. All of these items are fairly inexpensive and can be purchased on Amazon or at any local music shop/retailer.

It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
