Javi is a young, aspiring artist and visionary. Originally hailing from Minneapolis, MN, he grew up surrounded by strong artistic support. Not only was he influenced by his parents, who were jazz musicians, but also he was influenced by his own generation. His music is an eclectic blend of genres including jazz, hip hop, rock, R&B and others. Javi started playing piano at the age of 5, and was classically trained until he discovered his love of jazz music. In high school, he was a prominent player on the Twin Cities music scene and started his production career making tracks for Twin Cities hip hop artists. He won the Schubert Club Jazz Piano Scholarship Competition two years in a row (’06, ’07). He took the piano chair in the Minnesota Youth Jazz Band (’05-’07) and the Dakota Combo (’07 with Bobby Watson). In 2007, Javier was selected by the great Dave Brubeck and a panel of judges, in an international search, to be a part of the Brubeck Institute Fellowship program in California. Since then he has played at venues all across the nation and studied with some of the best instrumentalists in the world. The Brubeck Institute Jazz Quintet (’08-’09) won Best College Group Of the Year in DownBeat Magazine two years in a row (2009 and 2010). Javi received his bachelor’s degree in piano performance in late 2011 at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in NYC. Not only is Javi a virtuosic pianist, but also a producer, composer, arranger and educator as well.

For beginning students, I typically start with a basic methods book for their instrument, for example: Standard of Excellence Band Method. Method books like this are great to enforce the basics of their instrument while working with the basics of music theory. I also like to use music theory websites to teach students more in-depth information about how music works: how to read, notate, identify, etc. Once the student is comfortable enough on the basics and is ready to move on, he or she will be introduced to learning solo repertoire and more advanced music excerises that will benefit him or her in case of future auditions and recital performances. For more developed students, they will work on advanced etudes, scale excerises, and solo reporitoire to futher their musician skills.

Practice is ideal for each student.  I encourage my students in their practicing.  Progress will be made most quickly by those students who maintain the recommended practicing time (1 hour per day). Parents are also encouraged to be involved in their students practice. Taking the time to listen to your child play their weekly songs, or creating a set time for practicing in the students daily routine are good ways to become involved.

As a teacher, I like to focus on each students needs as becoming a well rounded musician.  I like to work from a few method books including Arbans, Rubank, and Schlossberg for building up your embouchere as a trumpet player.  We will focus in on technique, embouchere building, jazz improvisation, and music theory. I always encourage my students that if there is a piece of music they would like to learn, bring it to the lesson and we will work on it. It is important to also make each lesson fun, and enjoyable for the student while also learning the craft of their instrument. Progressing comes through practice and dedication which I try to encourage each student to work hard and do the best they can do!
