I am a big believer in the breath. For a beginner I do a lot of exercises with breath connection to encourage healthy, connected singing. I like the idea that the voice dances on the breath and is buoyed and protected by that technique. I am also a very physical teacher, encouraging students to use their whole body in the act of singing. The voice is carried by the whole body and not just the muscles that are the vocal chords. I began teaching when I was 17 and have a pretty busy schedule of up to 35 students a week! Many of those students still continue to take lessons after 3 years of instruction and have improved beyond their original goals. I find that each student has different interests (rock, jazz, classical, pop, etc.) which is why I enjoy focusing on what they want to learn. It is a basic book with specific essential elements for reading and understanding music. As the student progresses I use to introduce songs for their repertoire applying what they leaned in the book. For adolescent beginner piano students I recommend 'John Thompson's Earliest Piano Course'. In this series Books I-III build a strong base upon which a student can specialize in different genre and styles graduating from book III. For adult students beginning I would suggest John Thompon's Adult (or Modern) Piano Course. The pacing of this book is far more accelerated and more in keeping with an adult pace to work with.
