I began teaching starting in my undergrad, where I would teach weekly one-on-one, or group lessons to trumpet players in rural Indiana. Here, I found that I had a deep passion for teaching music, and that I would want to pursue it more. Now, as I'm pursuing my Master's Degree at the Manhattan School of Music, I am teaching young students privately, as well as in group lessons. I hold a PhD in Musicology (with a focus on the music of Japan) from Cornell University (2018), and regularly perform on both piano and trumpet here in NYC. For beginning piano students, I use a series of books designed for beginners called Dozen a Day. It is very organized and it teaches the student in a very clear way. For my trumpet students I use Arbans, Clarkes. Schlossberg, and 45 years of experience playing trumpet. As to a philosophy of teaching, I believe in never ever being mean to the student as that causes a negative experience. You can also improvise on songs that you hear on the radio without knowing the key of the song just by getting a feel of how the song sounds and you will find the notes on your instrument and start jamming to the songs you hear on the radio. For beginning students, I usually work with Hal Leonard's essential elements as well as use the piano as a tool for them to hear the pitches they are playing. Once the fundamentals are grasped we can work on introductory solo repertoire. For children I'd like to make this a bit more fun as well, introducing some easy tunes they will be familiar with or excited to play.
