When not performing I was the resident trumpet teacher and embouchure specialist at the San Francisco School Of Jazz and have taught privately on an ongoing basis. The core of my mission as an educator is to not only guide students toward realizing their own potentials as musicians, artists and complete human beings, but also to encourage and enable them to visualize their own growth and potential. To do that, I aim to construct learning environments which nurture self- discovery through guidance, as opposed to environments which dictate how students should develop and/or perceive material. I typically create my own lesson plans and try to cater them to the student. Most recently I've been working with trying to find a balance of teaching music theory and practical piano. When teaching theory, I often refer to Kotska's and Payne's "Tonal Harmony" for the order of the curriculum, and when it comes to exercises I will either write them out on the spot to demonstrate something to the student (I also feel it is important to SHOW the student how to MAKE music, ie. proper note notation, and symbol shape), or prepare them in advance if the content is more complex. My approach to teaching is a logical one. The student needs to learn to "crawl', and then to 'walk" and then to run. With an organized succession of excersizes, the student can learn the basics of the instrument which will lead to the ability to play more fun songs.That is the goal of learning the instrument; to be able to eventually play some fun music!! So I typically take a very relaxed approach during the first few lessons, to get the student to loosen up and feel comfortable, all while observing the student in order to assess their strengths and weaknesses, and figure out what types of music the student is interested in making. Then I can tailor their future lessons so that their goal of playing that type of music is never forgotten, or overshadowed by lots of "exercises" they feel aren't fun. Read More

It is a very special experience to be able to see a student progress. Depending on the frequency of the lessons, I will set goals for the student to reach by the time the next lesson occurs. I always make the goals realistic for the student and I try my best to make the goal something that the student will enjoy.
