After a few months, I begin adding solo repertoire that is appropriate for age and ability. For middle school age students and adults, I start with Alfred's Basic Piano, Adult, Level 1. For me i want every kid a teach to become famous musicians or at least feel good about music. I am not strict although i am very direction oriented. I aim to teach my students the difference between "playing the trumpet" and "making music" and how this distinction is applied to practice. "Playing the trumpet" is a physically demanding task that requires diligent, often tedious practice to become skilled at. "Making music", on the other hand, can be done by anyone at any skill level and is lots of fun. I have been fortunate to perform over 1,800 professional commitments in my career as well as teaching roughly 25 students.
