My approach to teaching is centered around whether the student is having fun. My goal is never to force anyone to become a professional in our lessons. If you want to get to that level I can certainly help, but I am more concerned about having fun playing trumpet and piano. We will do a lot of listening homework as well, since listening is just as important as playing. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. All of my students follow more or less a similar path that deviates a bit once they have developed some. No matter the age I start all students off with building fundamentals of tone, flexibility, articulation, and range. I use a combination of exercises from David Vining, UNC's own Buddy Baker, and Emory Remington. While building fundamental playing skills I will have students begin playing etudes. Younger students will start in their band method books, but as time goes on they will transition into Rochut's Melodious etudes, and the Rubank method books. Read More
