I'm an enthusiastic, energetic, kind and dedicated music instructor. As passionate as I am about music, I am even more so about the students I teach. I graduated from the University of Connnecticut, Storrs, with a Bachelor of Science in Music Education in 1972, and a Master of Music degree, with a concentration in Piano Pedagogy in 1980. For students in a beginning band program, I will use whatever method book they are currently using. For students not in a band program I like to use the Rubank Method. To build upon those method books, I like using the Arban book and the Cimera phrasing studies. Because sight reading and ensemble playing are very important to my teaching style, every lesson will begin with a couple duets. It depends on the age of the student, but there are plenty of method books and pieces that can both teach a student music theory and notation, as well as their performance skill. With beginners its perfect to start with the Rubank series from Beginner-Intermediate. Many students are given the "Standard of Excellence" series by their school teacher and that series works as well. I believe these books are a great start, but can get old fast. Read More

I cater lessons to YOUR needs and goals. I am not invested in there being a "right" technique of any kind. Together we will create a custom approach so that you will love the experience of playing the music you love.  I will share fun and efficient ways to practice so that you get immediate results. If desired, I also guarantee you will be playing a blues and improvising within a maximum of 6 weeks as long as you practice at least 10 minutes, three times a week.  You will have the option of playing along with recordings minus your part so that you can experience the joy of ensemble playing early on in the safety of your own home. I love creating small ensemble groups of students at similar levels and arranging concerts at regular intervals.
