I began teaching private lessons as part of the student teaching program when I was a student at Oberlin eight years ago, and I have consistently taught students in community music schools for the last six years. My focus is on developing good habits so that students can learn to play the instrument in the most natural and effortless way possible. This technical foundation will serve any player long into his or her life as a musician. That said, I also concentrate as much as possible on what a student wants to get out of lessons with me, whether that is playing the instrument with more technical facility, learning to improvise, getting into a different style of music, or learning more music theory. I am here to help my students achieve their goals, whatever they may be! I teach all levels, from beginning to more advanced students.
I am very relaxed in my teaching style and love the satisfaction of teaching privately. I choose to teach privately due to the heightened intensity of interaction with students and the fact that we can create a process that is uniquely adapted to the needs of each student. I have expectations for my students and they have expectations for me. I love that. I know and understand that if a student does not understand the method, technique, or approach I am trying to teach, it is not the student's fault, it is mine. Therefore I maintain flexibility in my teaching style and enjoy approaching each lesson as a challenge - and the goal of understanding is always attainable through hard work, patience, and dedication.
Teaching music is one of my greatest joys. I love being able to help students of all ages unlock the mysteries of playing music. I have been playing the trumpet since age 10, and after graduating from the University of Oregon in 2001, I auditioned to play for Thomas Mapfumo and the Blacks Unlimited from Zimbabwe. For the next ten years, I toured North America, Europe and Africa. When I wasn't on the road with Thomas and the band, I led my own jazz groups, played in Salsa and Hip-Hop acts, and taught trumpet and trombone lessons in Eugene and Portland, OR. I have recently relocated to West Haven, Connecticut, and I enjoy being so close to New York City, with its vibrant music and arts scene.
Every student has their own unique way of learning. Therefore, every musician has their own unique way of learning and interpreting music. As a teach and performer I like to harness a student's unique learning style and put it into a musical idea that they can relate to and enjoy.
I work with students, depending on their levels of musicianship. My main goal as a teacher is for my students to feel connected to the piece they are playing. "Stop thinking technical, and think musical."

Our recommended starting age for trombone is 8 or 9. The instrument requires a good amount of lung capacity as well as physical strength in the muscles around the mouth and the ability to maneuver the instrument's sliding valve. While a student younger than 8 might be physically able to play the instrument, this is rare.
Musika offers customized one-on-one music lessons at your home - a time saving solution for busy parents and students. The convenience of in-home lessons allows you to save time without having to transport your child to class, allows your child to maximize their busy schedule, and provides a safe and familiar environment in which to learn.
When beginning lessons, you must first decide if you are going to rent or buy your instrument. Most music stores will offer a rental program so that you will be able to pay monthly for a used instrument. While most instruments will be in good condition, you will want to make sure they are dent free and the parts are easy to take apart, and reassemble. If you are looking to buy, student trombones can be purchased through music shops or instrument catalogs, and will be relatively inexpensive.
Whether you are an adult starting out, or an advanced player, Musika's network has a trombone teacher for you! Beginner adult students start with us every day to begin working on learning the basics of music theory, technique, and overall musicianship. Our advanced students work to continue their education, and nurture and develop their skills. No matter your level, the teachers in our network work with you to customize your lessons, and assure your progress!
It is very important for trombone students to have a basic grasp of music theory from the very beginning of learning the instrument. Students will learn the different slide positions in order to play different notes. The teacher will help develop a correct embouchure, posture, and breathing technique, and also teach the student how to assemble, clean, and care for their trombone.

After signing up for lessons with David L. I knew I made the right choice. Just after a couple of weeks I didn't see him as a teacher but as a best friend. There was always a relaxed atmosphere during the lessons. He was very easy to talk to and he really listen to you. If I ever had a question he would answer. He tailors to what ever you want to do in that lesson. David L. is a great teacher and a friend. I totally recommend him for anyone

Melissa is very encouraging, positive, supportive and patient. She knows how to explain the technical details of flute and music notation to kids in a way that makes sense to them. She has been reliable so far turning up on time and calling if there is a need to reschedule. I would definitely recommend her to others.

My son and I both take lessons with Micheal. My son started on the ukulele and recently started the guitar. He is excellent with children. Very patient and very intuitive to the child's ability. He is also an excellent teacher for adults. I had not touched my guitar in several years and in a couple months not only to I remember everything I forgot but I'm learning many new techniques and am a much better player than I've ever been.

My daughter, Valarie is one of the original members of the Enrichment Center Percussion Ensemble under the guidance of Aaron. He patiently worked with Valarie as well as the other five members individually and as a group to produce music that has been shared and enjoyed locally as well as nationally. He has the ability to seek out the strengths of each student while building confidence. Through his teachings, not only had Valarie learned how to produce and enjoy music, but also responsibility and so many life skills for everyday living.

I feel she is a very professional teacher and I have already recommended your company and her to my friends who have children that play musical instruments. My 8 year old son has never been so enthusiastic to play his violin. His skills have improved almost exponentially since we have began lessons with Lauren. Your company has exceeded my expectations and I am very happy to have found it online.

Rebecca has been super with my son! He is 8yrs old and has mild aspergers. He has never played an instrument before but after one lesson with his teacher he could keep a beat on his drums. She is able to keep his attention and really makes it fun! She is flexible and easy going. I highly recommend her for any lessons. Very nice teacher! Thank you Rebecca for your outstanding service!!

Pavel is doing a great job with my 6 year old son. Pavel is doing a great job helping my son focus on technique and rhythm, which is something previous instructors weren't so successful with. Pavel is organized / structured / systematic, which is what my son needs now, but I hope he relaxes a bit as the lessons continue so that more "joy" comes through.

Rahsaan is an extremely talented player who relates really well with my teenagers. He has them both interested in learning. Given Rahsaan's expertise, it's clear that even though they are beginners now, they can learn from him for a long time to come. He's a real nice laid-back guy and both the boys really enjoy their time with him. I've been very impressed and pleased with the experience.

My daughter has been taking piano lessons through her school district program for the last two years. She had learned a lot in that class but I noticed that she needed advanced classes at this point. After reviewing several websites I decided to enroll my daughter for the trial at MUSIKA. We got Mrs. Veronica B., and I am more than happy we got her as my daughter's teacher. Mrs. Veronica B. was very professional and very knowledgeable at the trial day. She was able to assess my daughter skill's level, and then she was able to give suggestions about how to improve those skills. My daughter has taken 5 classes with Mrs. Barker, and I can see she enjoys each class and she's improved a lot since day one. I can picture my daughter playing her favorites songs on the piano very soon!!! :-)
Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.Ok
Are you sure that's your only availability? The more availability you easier it will be to arrange a teacher for you.
