In the first lesson, I assess the student's current ability and also discuss the student's personal goals and interests in music. Based on this information, I create a daily fundamentals routine for the student to use to improve the basic building blocks of playing a musical instrument. I also allow students to bring in music that interests them from solo material and pieces of music from band class. The recording of each lesson gives students something to look forward to at the end of our session. Whether they think that they've done really poorly or extremely well, I encourage them to listen to themselves critically and prepare to share genuine feedback. Then we discuss both their strengths and the areas of opportunity for growth. This practice helps students progress over time. I focus on the fundamentals.  When a student has a firm grasp on the fundamentals they can survive in any arena being a musician may place you in. Additionally I like to help my students discover their unique voice and how that uniqueness helps to add to a bands overall performance. Additionally, To me band is much more then just an extracurricular activity. I am a versatile trombonist who has experience in many musical ensembles. These include orchestral, concert band, brass quintet, jazz band, jazz combo, brass band, and Marine Corps Band settings. I also have a studio where I teach trombone, euphonium, and tuba players. I regularly perform in the Northern Virginia and Maryland area at church services, with orchestras, and with big bands. I have on several occasions performed with the Rappahannock Pops Orchestra as well as the Fredericksburg Big Band. Read More
