For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonards Essential Elements book, as well a basic understanding of music. Once the student has progressed to have a nice grasp of the fundamentals of music, I usually begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. I also believe in the importance of listening to as many professional recordings as possible of the instrument the student is taking lessons on. Read More

I began teaching back when I was in high school. I distinctly remember helping the younger trombonists at the grade schools and helping lower classmen as I got older. By the time I was a senior in high school I had several private students and I have been teaching routinely various students ever since. I intend to use my own experience and connections within the musical realm as a guidance tool to my students. Read More

I have a relaxed teaching style which emphasizes positive encouragement and musical enjoyment. I tailor each student's lesson according to their level of playing, musical preferences, strengths, and areas which can use improvement. I set goals for my students that are both challenging and realistic, and I like to be a positive and encouraging mentor for them as they develop and improve at their own pace. I like to acknowledge the student's success while encourage them in areas that can still use more work. Read More

My approach to learning an instruments is to have the students learn to play by ear first before they can start learning to read music. I find that most students are able to progress quickly because it frees them to focus on the playing the instruments rather than reading notes. I consider reading music like different subject that they learn later. Learning music is like learning to speak. First we learn to talk and then we learn to read and write. Read More

The lessons are structured and built around the needs of each individual student. We begin by exploring strengths and weaknesses, and then customize materials and methods based on this. At the center of my pedagogical philosophy is a style of learning built on positive reinforcement, using methods that are supported by research on brain development and learning. For older students that are more driven, we also spend more time on developing effective strategies for individual practice, and together we set clear developmental goals. Read More

For seven years, I have taught private trombone lessons in cities as far away as Los Angeles and as close to home as Boston itself. Although my primary instrument is trombone, I am able to teach lessons in composition and arranging, and can work with beginning piano students. I also use the piano as a tool for developing consistent tone on the trombone, and to teach ear training and music theory. Read More

For the younger beginning students, I usually start with Alfred's Beginning Piano Series. Once the student has a grasp of the fundementals, I will begin introducing major and minor scales as well as solo repertoire. For my adult students I will see their level of ability and musical interests, find appropriate material based on their taste and formulate the lesson to include fun stuff as well as build proper mechanics. For my horn lessons depending on the skill level I being with Essential Elements or the Arban book and build from there incorporating solos of the greats, and songs that they want to learn to play.
