Instruments: Trombone
My teaching experience began in high school, when I worked with the summer band programs of several local middle schools and gave incoming beginning band students a head start on learning the basics of brass instruments. I continued teaching similar programs in college, including middle and high school summer band programs that included sectionals, chamber ensembles, and small music theory classes. In my teaching, I like to incorporate improvisation and creative exercises as well as more traditional methods of learning. Read More

I believe in approaching each student individually. Each student's ability and/or understanding, no matter the level, may very, sometime drastically. So I tend to each student's individual needs on a case-by-case basis. I use various methods such as the Arban's book for fundamentals, Bordogni vocalise for lyrical style and stamina, various solo repertoire, and many more depending on the student's level of skills and understanding. My brass teaching method is based on correct breathing, posture and tone development. I believe a beautiful tone is the most important product we have to offer. Embouchure development comes with careful, purposeful practice in all ranges and at all dynamic levels. I also emphasize sight reading as an aid to becoming a well-rounded musician. Building personal confidence is one of the best ways to overcome performance anxiety. The method books I use are written by outstanding brass musicians such as Max Schlossberg, J. Read More

Due to my experience working with multiple grade/age levels, I have learned to carefully fine tune my teaching strategy for each individual student that I work with. At the beginner level I typically work from method books to ensure a solid development of performance fundamentals. I also like to spend a good bit of time establishing successful warm-up and practice routines. With intermediate level students I continue with more challenging method books as well as standard musical excerpts and etudes. Read More

I always start with the fundamentals of sound production along with the musical fundamentals such as scales and sight-reading that go along with performance. I am extremely interested in all aspects of the biomechanics of trumpet playing, from breathing to embouchure to tone production to technique. Because of my intensive study of brass pedagogy I am very capable of teaching euphonium/baritone horn, trombone, tuba, and French horn. I try to make bad trumpet players better, and good trumpet players great. Read More

My teaching experience began during my first year of college in 2014. While visiting home during the Holidays, I began giving private lessons. Along with my education classes, I completed several practicums as a well as a 12 week student teaching program. Ultimately, my goal is to instill music as an intricate part of all of my students' lives. It is important for students to form an appreciation for music while also creating their own identity in the art. Read More

Much of this depends on where the student is in their learning progression--if they are just starting out, then I will focus on the fundamentals of good trombone playing, and work with the basic books like Arban's methods for Trombone. I also have used the Hal Leonard series. But as soon as possible, I will move the student into both listening and playing assignments, starting with artists whose transcriptions are more accessible for both range and technique: Curtis Fuller (including transcriptions I created in college, which are really amazing for students), Hal Leonard's JJ Johnson collection, my own recordings and transcriptions, and Etudes for Jazz from Mike Carubia Jack Gale.
