Having a strong foundation in creating a sound consistently and efficiently makes learning everything else about brass playing infinitely easier. I personally have had teachers that focused too much on technical studies and theory, and not enough time on incorporating those skills into performance; which is the main reason why many people have a desire to learn a musical instrument. In my lessons, I focus on developing skills that are essential to my student's overall musical development. However, the most beneficial learning occurs when the students feels they were an active participant in the discovery(ah-ha! moments). Next, I pick a method book to work through to learn the fundamentals. For trombone, I use Rubank's "Elementary Method."
