I've been teaching for about 10 years. Since studying composition in college and graduate school, my teaching has expanded to include improvisation, music theory, and original pieces. Experience has taught me that, while a solid technical foundation on an instrument is invaluable, it's only half the puzzle. With some music theory and history education, students can more deeply understand the music they are playing and use this knowledge to make interpretive decisions that geratly affect performance. Understanding of theory is also critical to improvisation and composition - not just to understand the "rules," but to be able to break them with finesse.
I began teaching in high school. I am currently in college studying music education. I can efficiently teach from the ranges of beginners to intermediate/advanced (depending on the instrument). My specially instrument is euphonium.
For younger students, I like to start off with the fundamentals/basics to set a good foundation to what we will be learning in the future. Lip slurs, long tones, embouchure & amp; tuning are all key assets for beginners. Now for my advanced players we will definitely start in the music bible (The Arban Book) and work from start to finish. This will definitely teach players about double/triple tonguing, octave leaps/jumps & my personal favorite dynamics.
I use a variety of methods customed to every student that interacts with me.-One method is to practice drills targeting your weaknesses in the way you play.-Another method is a piece of music that targets your weaknesses.-Another method is leading by an example of my playing.-Another method is to guide you with my explanations of how you should be playing the music.-I will usually spend my own money to purchase more tools needed for my lessons. Booklets and such.-I have an arsenal of tools to use because I adapt to every situation with every individual student.-

The skills needed to play the trombone are usually only able to be achieved by children 8 and older. The instrument takes physical strength as the student must be able to move the slide valve, maintain proper embouchure to produce quality tone and have a large enough lung capacity to sustain proper breath control.
Adult students often choose to study jazz or blues once they have mastered the basics, as the trombone can help solidify their love for big band or latin music. The trombone is an instrument which requires dedication, and daily practice is required in order to develop a good tone and love for the instrument.

Laura is a fabulous teacher. I've always said, "It's all about the teacher." That skillful, effective teacher who can reach that child and ignite her passion, is truly a gift. Ric does that for my daughter. As a former music teacher myself, the most challenging thing in working with children is how to build their fundamental musical skills while letting them have fun and be expressive. The teacher must create a safe, supportive environment, and Ric does that. Ric immediately focuses on fundamentals of tone and technique, giving my daughter succinct instruction on how to improve, thus she can sense the improvement immediately. Ric seems extremely easy going; even when lighting a fire under her sometimes under-achieving butt, Ric never criticizes, judges or blames. He works with my child, understanding her, helping her problem solve, and even giving her the quick answer sometimes so she can move quickly and stay motivated. Ric balances fundamentals with fun and expressiveness, so my child feels as though she can 'play' and they truly make music in every lesson. I am thankful we found a good match with Ric.

My son is truly enjoying his lessons with Chris. He looks forward to them and is motivated to practice. Chris is conscientious and shows up on time and whenever he is supposed to. Ed is THE best instructor I've ever had and I've had many instructors over the years in various fields of study. Ed met us at a music store to help choose a guitar, this is after he first called and asked all the right questions. Steve is an excellent instructor. My son has really connected with him and he is learning the guitar quickly. Steve is patient and never rushes through a lesson in order to make it fit within the session time limit. In addition, before he leaves, he writes notes and instructions for my son to follow. By the next lesson, my son is confident in what Steve has taught him. Most importantly, Steve builds my son's confidence in his own own ability and progress after each lesson.

Melissa is very encouraging, positive, supportive and patient. She knows how to explain the technical details of flute and music notation to kids in a way that makes sense to them. Ted S. is teaching clarinet to one of my children, and piano to two others. He is extremely knowledgeable, and very encouraging. His teaching methods are keeping my children enthused about their lessons, and without that, you have nothing. Two of my children were taking piano lesson from another teacher for the past year, and not progressing. Ted has been able to evaluate their skills individually, determine what was missing in their music education, and begin again with some early basics they seem to have missed. I am convinced we are finally moving forward, and am very happy about that. I wish I would have made this change much earlier.
Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.Ok
