Hello! I love teaching and value each and every student I have as an individual, and cater my lessons to match your interests. I'm originally from Georgia, and moved to New York to pursue my career as a jazz trombonist, and since have performed all over the world including Europe and the Caribbean. I also love folk and rock music, and have played banjo for 2 years, and also write music for my own group where I combine trombone playing and the banjo with other jazz musicians! Read More

I start all my beginners with a strong set of fundamental practices, from breathing techniques and games to lip slurs and articulations. I find that the best way to motivate a student to practice and learn is to play music that they know. I teach beginning and intermediate students out of the Walter Beeler method, which provides a good progression of theory along with recognizable music. I like to finish lessons working on pop music or video game songs. Read More

I enjoy hearing the students natural abilities, understanding what kind of music pours out of them, acknowledge that, and from there we develop it. At the same time, direct the student with technique, theory and any other tools that will facilitate the music they are passionate about. Give the students homework, let them know that there is always another step, to lead by example! As a trumpet player it is very important to establish a healthy routine that will build your tone, endurance that in the end you understand enough so you can teach and always evaluate yourself. I have created my own method of teaching which I have perfected over the years. I create my own exercises and practice materials based on the level and interests of each individual student. I use the software program "Finale" in order to create the musical compositions that I prepare for my students. I always accompany my students on the piano. I am well versed in the various styles of music and am comfortable teaching students how to improvise also. Read More

For beginning students, I typically use Essential Elements or Standard of Excellence (whichever they are not using in school if any). I use these series until a student has progressed enough at the fundamentals of playing that specific functions can be addressed. At that point, I will begin to split instruction into flow studies, flexibility, tone, air movement, and articulation, drawing from a variety of books created by some of the world's leading brass musicians. My teaching style is very "go with the flow." Each day is a new opportunity to learn a little more about music and your chosen instrument. Each lesson is a time where we can delve deeply into one piece of music, or jump around to several different topics. Of course, there is always room for structure and I make sure that we stay on track! There are so many different aspects of each instrument to cover, but there no need to get bogged down with complicated acronyms and over complex methodology. Read More

For beginning students, I typically start with the method book that the child is given by the school Music teacher, making certain that they are at least adequately prepared to play their assigned studies (or pages) for their school Music lesson. I also incorporate playing the Duets provided in that volume, along with the students. I then suggest that they purchase other necessary methods, duets and solos at their local Music Store(s), as they progress, and they will therefore require more advanced Musical materials than that used at their school.
