My teaching style is unique in that I do not push directly for quality. I believe that quality should be the natural product of efficient practice, which can only be achieved by early introduction to good technique, good habits, and positive motivation. When I start with a student, my goal is to make them smile and laugh. Students with a positive association with their instrument and playing it will be more inclined to listen and more inclined to practice. Read More

I have been teaching brass instruments to students of all ages for over fifteen years now and I love it! I am very fortunate to have studied privately with many great teachers with varied teaching styles and philosophies which has helped me become a well-rounded educator. I have also had the orpportunity to perform with numerous ensembles throughout the United States and around the world. Playing the trumpet and french horn, I have performed in countless ensembles including orchestras, concert bands, jazz ensembles, brass quintets, woodwind quintets, brass bands, marching bands, drum and bugle corps, rock groups, circus bands, and many others. The lessons are structured and built around the needs of each individual student. We begin by exploring strengths and weaknesses, and then customize materials and methods based on this. At the center of my pedagogical philosophy is a style of learning built on positive reinforcement, using methods that are supported by research on brain development and learning. For older students that are more driven, we also spend more time on developing effective strategies for individual practice, and together we set clear developmental goals. Read More

The Arban book is available for free on PDF. For beginning students, I discuss long tones, sound, and simple scale studies. Once students grasp the fundamentals, I like to teach how they relates to the music they listen to. Through this, students can learn how theory and scales become music As we get advanced, I like to move in to scale studies, technical warm ups, and theory. When working on a recital performance, or simply learning the instrument, I like to concentrate on listening, developing a clean and full sound, breathing, and musicality. Read More

My approach to learning an instruments is to have the students learn to play by ear first before they can start learning to read music. I find that most students are able to progress quickly because it frees them to focus on the playing the instruments rather than reading notes. I consider reading music like different subject that they learn later. Learning music is like learning to speak. First we learn to talk and then we learn to read and write. Read More

There are two essential parts to learning/improving you ability on an instrument; Instruction and Practice. I will provide instruction, but in order for the student to show improvement they need to practice. When learning any instrument or even for that matter, singing, developing muscle memory is the key. That requires repetition to get the brain to register the process. Also, I believe that it is fundamental to learning a musical instrument to perform/practice with a group, So I encourage my students to join in a school ensemble or community group. Read More

For seven years, I have taught private trombone lessons in cities as far away as Los Angeles and as close to home as Boston itself. Although my primary instrument is trombone, I am able to teach lessons in composition and arranging, and can work with beginning piano students. I also use the piano as a tool for developing consistent tone on the trombone, and to teach ear training and music theory. Read More
