My teaching style is overall fairly laid back. I let my students set the pace, but I also expect them to be passionate, curious, and hard-working. I love to encourage students as they explore different areas of their playing, and try different ideas. I push my students just out of their comfort zone, and force them to take risks. For beginning students (regardless of age instrument) I try to simplify the approach and work on a set of warm ups/exercises coupled with a performance piece or song that they can feel good about and lots of fun listening assignments. From there I have a few options of instruction methods that I tailor to the individual student. More intermediate/advanced students will not escape from some of the basics (metronome, scales, rudiments etc.) but will be met with many more choices of performance material based more on their individual goals. Since then I have taught for about 10 years total, beginning guitar, ukulele, and piano (beginning through intermediate), first for a music store and later in my home. I began my journey teaching in college when I became a tutor for underclassmen and women who desired extra guidance and insight in certain areas, which included music theory, composition, and performance. Since then I have taught in-home, in-studio, and online lessons regularly for over 5 years. Currently, I have upwards of 40 students of varying ages and levels, all very motivated and engaged in music.
