I generally use the Alfred series for teaching piano. For teaching voice I may use a combination of books based on what style of music the student wants to focus on the most. For guitar, violin and clarinet, I use typical beginner books that introduce the fundamental fingerings, chords and notes for that particular instrument as well as basic music terminology. I have been teaching since 2002. My first teaching job was at a small private school. I then moved on to teach six years at public high schools in Texas, and then I moved on to teaching at the University level. Throughout that time I have always had a private studio as well. In the early years of my teaching profession I taught in various small Texas school districts. I taught in Houston ISD for over 25 years. I have taught PK fifth grade students throughout my career. I initiated a piano lab at my last school for second grade students. I employed creativity and fun in my mission to expose my students to the use of various percussion instruments. I believe that it is important to tailor lessons to my individual students, helping to foster a love of music and learning. I think it is important for my students to have goals that they are striving to achieve. They can be big goals, like making it into a college of choice, but I also think small ones are important, like mastering the Bb major scale. I am a recent graduate from the University of North Texas where I obtained a masters degree in organ performance. I am currently a church organist and have been playing the organ since the age of 16 and piano since the age of 12. I have had many performance opportunities both as a pianist and as an organist performing as a soloist and as a collaborator.
