Each student progresses at their own pace; therefore, I don't impose "deadlines" as to when a student should advance to the next level.  A lot of that comes from the individual's motivation and reason for learning the instrument.  During a lesson, I go over concepts in a given piece, help discover where more difficult passages will be, and show the student the techniques needed to master those elements.  The main part of the lesson, however, is on the STUDENT...and by that I mean PRACTICE to prepare for the next week's progression. I have three areas of emphasis in my teaching: provide the student with a balanced repertoire, demand correct technique, and require a solid foundation in music theory.  I will provide my students with opportunities to participate in recitals, festivals, contests, and state theory exams. I'm an energetic, passionate and motivated instructor strongly committed to the belief that everyone is musical. I teach students of all ages and levels, focusing on repertoire, technique, theory, sight-reading and improvisation.  My special "niche" is teaching young children.    My students (ages 3-6)  embark on a musical adventure with Beethoven Bear and Mozart Mouse, filled with singing, listening, music appreciation, movement and rhythm activities.  Students also participate in drum circles, play boom whackers, experience parachute play and ukulele playing. Music has been a part of my life since the age of 10. I started on saxophone in the 6th grade and continued through high school and college. I was a part of the University’s Wind ensemble,jazz band, and marching band. I had the opportunity to perform with Grammy Award winners and world renown composers. For very young, or beginner students, I use elements of MusicPlay, which really make learning the basics of music fun and applicable. For intermediate or slightly older students, we would go over the basics of singing technique, including posture, breathing, tone, register, and interpretation/performance, usually in that order. We learn through vocalizes and art song, moving to more complicated pieces as progress is made.
