For very young, or beginner students, I use elements of MusicPlay, which really make learning the basics of music fun and applicable. For intermediate or slightly older students, we would go over the basics of singing technique, including posture, breathing, tone, register, and interpretation/performance, usually in that order. We learn through vocalizes and art song, moving to more complicated pieces as progress is made. Most schools use the Hal Leonard Essential Elements and I tend to focus on this method as supplemental instruction but other methods are fine as well especially if the student is already working through a particular method book. For young students I encourage a mix of formal music instruction with music the student enjoys. Nothing unlocks a love of learning like discovering how your favorite music works!
