Therefore, it’s important that each student progresses at his or her own pace, I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a student’s desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. A method I use to encourage my student’s progress is to give them stars for when they work on their assignment; the stars they earn will allow the student to choose a song of their choice that is not from the same genre being studied—this may be a pop song. I like to get to know my students so that I can tailor the lessons and materials to their own interests. We have a mostly informal interaction, but I point out ways to improve playing at each lesson. I enjoy watching a student make progress and help celebrate when a particular goal is reached (such as the completion of a lesson book or the mastering of an important piece). I have occasionally taught lessons during brief stints off of the road, but playing on the road has been my primary job for most of my adult life. Good fundamentals are very important - developing good singing habits while getting rid of bad ones is key to consistent improvement. I believe that as a teacher, the best thing I can do for a student is to give them the tools to succeed outside of the lesson. My thirty years piano teaching experience began in Eagle Pass , Texas when my own piano teacher encouraged me to begin teaching my own students. I actually began my teaching experience by helping out my piano teacher's students' with their piano practice. By that time I had performed in piano recitals , played in the National Guild of Piano Teacher Auditions, and attended piano workshops with my piano teacher.
