For beginning and intermediate students, I like to assign short pieces from method books such as Student Instrumental Course and Rubank. For more advanced students, I will help them explore their particular interests, introduce them to traditional repertoire, and for jazz/rock/pop students, aid them in the process of transcribing the music they love, which benefits their vocabulary as well as their ears. I make the study materials cut across other areas of musicianship like sight-reading (by notating their choice of songs), technical etudes/studies to improve physical fitness such as accuracy, tone quality, articulation on the instrument, harmony, and history. Asides teaching musical instruments, my students and I discuss artistic goals and music business especially for those who would like to make a living as full-time musicians. For beginners I often start with the Standard of Excellence, but it does not take long before we start to get into more individualized education. For example, a student may be bound for high school jazz band, in which case we will immediately begin on music theory and scale/mode practice from as early as 5th grade. On the other hand, I may have a high school flute student who wants to audition for conservatory, in which case I would use some Marcel Moyse books, orchestral excerpt practice, and standard solo repertoire. My teaching style revolves from teaching the music, not just the instrument. As a result, even if the student eventually becomes technically unavailable, he/she can still listen to great musical details and appreciate the sound world with depth and understanding. I expect my students to learn more on their own than from myself because I teach the way to learn in addition to the way to play.
