Instruments: Saxophone Flute Clarinet Recorder
I typically start beginner students on the Rubank Elementary Method books for saxophone, clarinet, or flute. These books are a great way to introduce the basic mechanics of the instrument, as well as reading music. I generally like to branch out from the method books as soon as possible, by supplementing the basic reading with other technical studies and pieces. For adults and more advanced students, I like to steer the focus more in the direction of what they want to learn, while still teaching the proper fundamentals of the instrument! Read More

My teaching experience comes from spending a lot of time as a student throughout my educational career and analyzing the approaches that helped me out when I was younger. In college I would often sub for a friend of mine at a local music studio which helped me deal with a variety of different students of varying ages and backgrounds, as well as a few students of my own. I've found that setting small and easily achievable goals in combination with consistent practice is very effective. Read More

In addition to teaching music (which I have done on and off for about 4 years), I also enjoy teaching in and of itself---I have worked as a substitute teacher, a personal trainer, and a martial arts master at various points in my life. Hello, Im very excited about teaching students the very important basic principles of music when helping them realize their voice and ability to write and perform their own original music. I graduated from Berklee College of Music in 2008 with a degree in Professional Music and a focus in classical composition/jazz pedagogy/music theory/jazz performance. Ive had the wonderful pleasure of touring over 40 countries and recording with great artists such as Esperanza Spalding, Terri Lyne Carrington, Jeff Tain Watts, Rudimental, Ravi Coltrane, John Blake, Kimberly Thompson, Vijay Iyer, Tyshawn Sorey, Peter Evans, and many more amazing artists. I start with assessing the students' capabilities, after which I begin to develop the following areas: Development of their sound; Instrument Technique; Jazz Improvisation and Jazz Language; Theory and Jazz Harmony; Study and Development of Students' Own Repertoire. Depending on the level of the students and their needs, I push certain areas more or less. The key to becoming a successful student is to practice, to develop a good technique, but also to listen to a lot of music to develop the talent for music. Read More
