For beginning young students I prefer the Rubank Elementary Method for saxophone, clarinet and flute, and my own (unpublished) method for recorder. For older beginners, there are many books on the market. I'll work with what the student perfers. For more advanced students there are classic works such as Klose for clarinet or saxophone, solo works for competition or performance, or just for fun. My teaching method is to provide exercises, pieces, and etudes that are at an appropriate level for the student. I listen to my students play, and I comment on good aspects and any problems. During each lesson, I will explain how performance problems can be corrected. This will ensure that the student will develop good fundamentals for musical performance. I teach from a flexible curriculum depending on the student's goals and interests. If someone wants to learn technique, music theory, songwriting, how to play Taylor Swift songs, arranging, composing, confidence, et cetera we will work on what is driving them to take lessons and learn!
