I have been playing music since I was in 6th grade, and have been playing in bands on and off since high school. While I do not have an academic background in music per se, I have years of experience teaching children and adults, and I feel I can teach you just as well as I have taught my other students in the past, and honestly myself---I started playing saxophone (in 6th grade as I previously mentioned), and in more recent years I have started playing piano, guitar, and harmonica (in that order of competence). Depending on the individual needs goals of each student, I will customize lesson plans on a week-to-week basis. If there are no immediate goals for my students, I prefer to focus on classical technique and tone exercises that I compile through a variety of method books for each woodwind instrument. This includes but is not limited to: Moyse, Kroepsch, Baermann, Ferling, Shaw, Filas, Lacour, and many others. Classical technique is boring however, and I also believe that it should be applied towards learning real music that I will tailor to each student! Read More

My teaching style is focused on playing as much as possible and encouraging good practice habits. The most important thing I can do as a teacher is teach my students good practice habits! This includes showing students not only WHAT to practice, but HOW to practice it. By spending as much time as possible in the lesson playing together, I have found that my students have more fun playing in the lesson, learn more, and in turn practice more during the week! The best thing I can do as a teacher is help you realize the path of least resistance for achieving your goals. So, I have developed a style called the Dotted Line Approach. On the first day of lessons, we will discuss both short term and long term goals. Following this, we will develop a roadmap with smaller goals for each week, month, 3 months, and year. Each month, we will revisit your goals, discuss what is and what isn't working, and make plans to stay on track towards meeting your goals. Read More

I love teaching beginning students, in particular, as I get to watch them grow and learn a completely new skill they've never had before! I love watching students find their voice and gain the skill of playing a new instrument so that they might find a way to express themselves through music! I try to combine musicality and technique in a fun, engaging way that makes students excited to practice. Read More
