I've been teaching piano to students of all ages as my sole profession since 2002.  I usually have between 20 and 25 students at a time.  I have also earned certification through the Music Teachers National Association through a combination of testing and proofs of competency.  I keep up to date professionally  through my memberships in Lancaster Music Teachers Association and the Main Line Music Teachers Association, the National Guild of Piano Teachers and in my role as the Center Coordinator for the Music Development Program.  Most of all though, I've learned from my students, who are always the best teachers.  The part I love best about my job is that I get to cater the curriculum to each student individually.  Each student can have their own "best assignment". Vocal lessons are a bit different, as everyone has sung to some degree, even it's just to themselves! For beginning vocal students, I start by simply teaching a student how to warm up; from there, we work together to determine what a student's natural strengths and weaknesses are and select repertoire that the student is personally interested in that is also appropriate to their level of proficiency. For the beginning student, I typically suggest a collection of specific studies from an array of sources, some designed simply for technique and others for the development of musical understanding. Naturally, these depend on the individual and their needs. I am most dedicated to facilitating the needs of each individual student and providing them the ability to express their musical ideas clearly and easily. For more advanced students, I will focus on honing technical proficiency and challenging them with new repertoire, preparing them for new musical opportunities, such as youth orchestras, chamber music, recitals, and competitions to further their growth. I am a trumpeter, multi-instrumentalist, and composer/arranger in the Philadelphia and New York regions. My primary instrument for the past 16+ years is trumpet; I also regularly perform on assorted brass, electric bass, and vocals.
