My first lesson is a casual meeting with the student (child/parent, or adult). I want to both meet and start to develop a good relationship and understanding with all involved. With younger students I talk with the parent and show them what we are working on and the logic behind it. Of course, this strategy applies to adults as well. I started playing acoustic folk styles in 1962 and added 60's rock and more as time went on. I joined my first rock band in 1965 and have now played all styles of rock, blues, folk, country, bluegrass, jazz, and contemporary Christian and worship music. I also play and teach bass and other stringed fretted instruments, keyboards, and drums and percussion. My experience in teaching began 15 years ago in working with church choirs and bands, and eventually becoming a Graduate Teaching Assistant from 2016-2018 in the Musical Theatre Opera department at Arizona State University. I have also taught at Childsplay in Tempe, AZ as a Music Director. In addition, I was awarded a Ph.D. in Music Composition/Theory and Instrumental Music Education from the Union Institute and University in Cincinnati.
