For my advanced students (18+), depending on how advanced they are, I start them in the "First Book of _______ Solos" series. This series covers singing in English as well as several other languages and provides a good foundation for singing. Anything else I do with the student is on an individual basis. For younger brass students (10-14) I would teach out of the Standard of Excellence Books unless they are more advanced where I would start them in the Arbans Book, Robert Getchell Book, and/or Schlossberg Book. Methods change depending on a student's level.  I want a beginner to feel completely comfortable being a beginner.  We start with the basics and I adjust material to personal levels of development.  If you have previous experience, we will use the first lesson to assess technique and repetorie and advance from there.  I am aware of several piano workbooks that take you from beginner to level four, these are not always the best for every student. My musical life has been extraordinary. Born in Mpls. MN, I attended the Aspen Musical Festival before my departure to Vienna Austria for Master studies in Violin/viola and piano. Scholarship intended for one year ended up a 25 year tenure, teaching, performing in Vienna and raising a family. I returned to the US to become executive director of a music school in MN. I was able to start new after school music programs for elementary schools throughout the district, start an orchestra program and open a theater program for kids. Read More

My teaching style is very focused on the student's desire to learn what they want. Very early into taking on a new student, I try to find what/who inspires them. Doing so allows me to tailor my teaching to each individual student. I also like to have 3 main "small improvement" objectives for each lesson. There's improvement on what we did during our last lesson, improvement during the lesson with something new I will introduce, and improvement for our next lesson with something I will give to the students to work on themselves after our lesson. For beginners, I like to start with getting to know the keys and their patterns. There are 7 different white keys and 5 different black keys and once you figure out the pattern, it becomes easy to identify the keys on the piano. After that, I like to touch over basic music theory i.e. identifying sharps and flats, intervals, structures of scales, etc. I also like to teach my students how to read sheet music and flashcards (which I have) have helped a numerous amount of times with that. Public School Music teacher 33+ years ( now retired) Taught Piano for over 40 years Director of two community bands including current Crosstown Community Band church keyboardist, accompanist and choir director Working musician in several bands My teaching goes back to before my college days, teaching at a music store. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress, and gain a passion for music. For brass, woodwind, and percussion students who are in a school band or orchestra, I would use the school's chosen method book in additional to supplemental materials that I would provide, based on the student's interests and needs. For those who are not in band and are just starting, my preferred method for brass and woodwind players is Tradition of Excellence. For intermediate players, I like to use material from the Rubank Intermediate book in addition to more fun material on an individual basis. Read More

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
