For Flute students I use the Trevor Wye Beginners Book for the Flute. Clarinet I use the Rubank Method books. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing a student progress, or better yet, develop a love for music. When my students succeed, I feel as though I have. I feel as though every student should progress at their own pace and music especially should not be something that stresses the student out (especially when it is art). For younger children, I typically start with the fundamentals such as distinguishing between the head voice and the chest voice. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for said student. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in both repertoire and vocal goals, and guide my instruction according to their goals. I usually start out by doing the methods book but I also stress the importance of playing with others in a group or duet setting. I love getting to play the teacher part with my students so it's more of a collaboration than a solo job. My goal is to have my students play duets with each other if that can be accommodated.
