I am classically trained (obviously) and I am the first and still only person in my family to graduate from a four year college and later graduate school, having earned BM and MM degrees in Piano Performance with a minor in organ at Shenandoah University. My methods include a wide variety of resources. For beginning students I like both the Hal Leonard and John Thompson approaches. Along with the lesson books, i also encourage technical studies including scales, arpeggios and other studies to build up finger strength, dexterity and independence, As the student progresses, I introduce memory work, choring and basic improvisation. For the more advanced student I let them work on repertoire of their choosing, stressing a variety of genres and styles. Read More

Instead of using existing method books which may or may not contain music that the student can relate to, I like to use the favorite songs of the student.  Once the student makes known his/her request I then create an arrangement of that particular song and tailor it to suit their level ( beginner ,intermediate,advanced ).  This ensures a high level of interest  and motivation on the students part.   For those students who insist on using method books I'm OK with that too ( So the traditionalists are welcome too). The most important thing for me when it comes to teaching is knowing that my student is progressing but also enjoying their experience overall, another very important factor is overall retention of the information. As technique improves, so will the sound. I work on intonation and a good bowing arm technique. I can play and they repeat. It helps that I can accompany on the piano if one is available, but if not, the students can listen to me play to help with intonation. Having access to the CDs allows the student to progress at his own speed with an always available accompaniment that makes things SO much easier than it is having to play all alone. Read More
