Instruments: Piano
When I started my piano lessons, I worked mostly with the Hanon exercises. Since this book has always been essential material to my learning, I will use this book to teach the beginning students and show them that exercises can also be fun and enjoyable to play, as I find them to be. As the student begins to dominate the basics of piano, I will introduce simple and easy pieces of Classical Music that will not only be fundamental to the beginner student's learning but also of the students liking; this way the learning will also be enjoyable and fun. My approach to each student is individual and dependent on the experience of the student. For beginning students I focus almost exclusively on the fundamentals such as right and left hand independence, finger positioning, posture, and so on. Then I'll try introducing more complexity in increments. For adults, my method is the same as with children unless the adult in mind has demonstrated greater expertise on the instrument. If the adult is more advanced I'll introduce more difficult piano repertoire to challenge the student. Read More

I began my career not as a teacher but as a performer of music. Originally, it was my ultimate goal to reach the highest obtainable musical ability through performance of the oboe and English horn. I practiced six hours daily regardless of health condition, and was exceptionally thorough while preparing for solos and concerts. Through the University of Northern Iowas Study Abroad Program, I was afforded the opportunity to study German, live with an Austrian host family and attend classes at both the citys university and music conservatory. I first started teaching kids privately about 4 years ago in their home and I started off with just basic stuff like note reading and pop music but as time passed by I came up with a teaching method that I am pretty confident in. I also worked at a tutoring center teaching guitar and piano to the kids focusing on more rock styles of playing. So my students were learning music from their favorite bands and what they wanted to learn. Read More

I have seen many beginning students become advanced students over a period of years. I work with several families and have enjoyed the experience of seeing younger siblings of students become my students as well. Read More

My first contact with music was during my early childhood, when I took piano, guitar and violin lessons. Growing up, I was always active playing with several youth orchestras and various ensembles, ranging from classical to popular and folk music. I studied piano and composition at the California State University, Sacramento, where I had the opportunity to study with world class musicians and be part of cutting edge orchestras and choirs; during my college years I went on several tours with a choir, performing in venues such as Carnegie Hall, N.Y I currently perform as pianist and accompanist with Opera singers from the area, and also compose upon comissions. I encourage progress over awards. It is vital that the singer be able to rely on their fundamental and progress at their own pace to be able to build healthy habits that will last for a lifetime of singing. I try to understand the goals and desires for all students to be able to help them reach that goal in a healthy progression. I am very challenging but singing if supposed to always be fun as well or there is no use in doing it every day. Read More
