When teaching students who are young, I would first start off with the fundamentals. For example, I would explain music terms to them and develop the new language from there. Once the student has a basic understanding of music, I would then talk about the Circle of Fifths and encourage them to participate in events like concerts or festivals in school. For students that are beginners in music, I use the Essential Elements and Rubank methods to teach them how to read music as well as their instrument. For more advanced students, I place more of an emphasis on the fundamentals of the instrument specifically developing a warm, beautiful sound and establishing a vast technical facility.
