For beginning piano students I always like to start lessons with keyboard familiarity, vocabulary and recognition. we play games and use rhythm sticks and learn patterns and placement on the piano. I also start with finger placement and strengthening skills with repetitive Finger Phrases and John Thompson basic levels 1 through 3 songs. I use a combination of different methods rather than one method. The parts to my approach is; 1) Exposure, by listening to high information music. 2) Discovery, becoming familiar with the chosen instrument by means of discovering how to make music with it and what are the possibilities with said instrument. 2) Association, by learning songs and pieces that the student is already familiar with. 3) Analysis, breaking apart songs and sounds that the student is familiar with to understand the theory behind it. 4) Aplication, by using the knowledge aquiered through learning familiar with to learn new pieces of music. For each of my student's lessons, I have them play for me their pieces from the lesson book and their scales and arpeggios. At the end of the lesson, I take a few notes for the student so they know what to focus on or fix for their pieces, as well as keep track of which key they are working on for their scales.
