First of all, I would ask the student if music would be his/her career or just a hobby. If it is to be his/her career, my approach would be more theoretical. But if it would be just a hobby like mine, I would encourage the student to learn by ear supplemented with a little theory to be able to learn a musical piece or song in the shortest time possible. It was, but it was even more fun for me because I was already well comfortable with what they were teaching, so the teacher would use me as an aide to assist the other students with what they were learning. Throughout high school and college I taught the basics to cousins, girlfriends, and buddies on guitar, drums, and even ukulele (which I learned on the fly, but my understanding and past experience with music made it an easy task). Aside from attending to the normal duties of a section leader, there were several times when I would privately teach students or host sectionals at my home. I have done this for three years and it has been a major success. I love helping students develop their skills and seeing them grow. I would encourage practice at least a little bit each day and I always helped them prepare for a concert or a recital. Read More

I do enjoy teaching out of books, especially younger children. It gives a visual to emphasize what I am teaching. Younger students, I tend to teach reading music with single notes as it is easier on the hands. It then creates an avenue to introduce basic music theory concepts. Read More

I started out tutoring in college to help out, then was asked by the school district if I would tutor professionally, to the elementary students in the San Bernardino CA area. I have since expanded to tutoring privately, and have taught anywhere from 5 year olds learning piano to high school students wanting that coveted first chair position in trumpet to college level students wanting to learn guitar and beyond. I've even taught music theory and basic voice. Read More

For beginners I like to start with Essential Elements 2000, although this book isn't specifically written with trumpet in mind, I do I want to get students making music as soon as possible and EE 2000 is a great start. As students advance I use some of the standard trumpet method books such as - Clarke Technical Studies, Arbans Complete Method for Trumpet, I also write out exercises that can't be found in books but feel will help the student progress.
