Dependent on the instrument, I generally use essential musical workbooks as well as my own scales and exercises that create a better base to suppliment the workbooks. I find that these general books are useful to keep the student's growth on track, however, my own sound exercises alllow wind players to usually progress at a quicker rate. I like to encourage to all my students to practice technique every day because consider that it will give them flexibility with the instrument. Also, I will stimulate them to find out the beauty, complexity and the appropriate interpretation of the repertoire that they are playing. I use a combination of established teaching methods, such as Alfred, Bastien, Hanon and Hal Leonard, as well as my own methods, which I've developed over the years. I also effectively utilize technology, such as Finale notation software to create special arrangements of songs for my students, YouTube videos for audio/visual support, and iPads. I have cultivated a warm demeanor and good sense of humor, which has helped my students remain engaged and in anticipation of the next lesson. Read More

My teaching experience has been quite varied, with ample experience teaching private students and group classes of all ages and ability levels. I have taught privately for more than 10 years, and have always encouraged a supportive, compassionate, and engaging learning environment. Most recently, I was awarded a Teaching Fellowship at the Mannes School of Music, where I was fortunate to be a professor of piano for undergraduate music majors. I started taking piano lessons at the age of 5. As a I continued to take piano lessons, I eventually in middle school began to study with a professor from Julliard until entering the university. I graduated from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University with a Bachelors of Music degree in piano performance. However, I started teaching right away and have enjoyed teaching for over 40 years. Hi! Im Kate! I am a jazz vocalist and instrumentalist and teacher from Houston TX. I started my musical journey at Houston's High School for the Performing and Visual arts where I concentrated my studies in flute, but ultimately fell in love with singing. I am a 2019-2022 Downbeat Magazine Student Music Award Winner, a 2018 2019 YoungArts Winner in jazz voice, and I've performed at various venues including the 2018 Newport Jazz Festival, 2022 SXSW Festival, and the world renowned Birdland Jazz Club in New York City.
