I often create a plan for my students with music materials such as these: scales and arpeggios, etudes, repertoire, sight-reading. Depending on the student, I can stick to a book we use and supplement it with my own handouts. Often students do not have theory or ear-training classes so I include some training in these areas so that it is easier for the student to memorize music and to learn it quicker. Read More

I am comfortable teaching with many piano methods. Some of my favorites include Alfred, Faber and A Dozen a Day Series. For more advanced students, I often recommend the Music for Millions Series or Bastien Piano Literature. For jazz, I often use Hal Leonard's "Your First Fake Book" and the "Joy of Jazz". All my students also get a strong foundation in scales and theory. I also stress learning all the notes on the grand staff and there are many good apps for this on tablets and smart phones. I think that, while proper technique and repertoire are important, it is essential that young beginners enjoy playing the piano. My job is to show my students that making music is fun! And this is my goal with my album for kids, everything in that was thought to go through the mostly important techniques but always having fun and making music. Read More
