For Beginner students I have them start with the recorder. The instrument allows for a smooth segue to the flute being that the student can see their fingers and the recorder does not require the same air speed and lung capacity that the flute does so the student can pace themselves. For intermediate or advanced students I will go through orchestral excerpts, etudes, or technical studies with them. I follow the same model with my adult students, if they are just starting out I will recommend beginning on recorder to solidify fingerings however the mental and physical capacity of an adult versus a young child are very different. I continued my training in piano at the University of Hartford under David Westfall, Paul Rutman, Susan Cheng and Grace Smith. My music career began in 1980's as an advertising copywriter and jingle composer in New York City within a big advertising agency. I composed well-known commercials for Purina Cat Chow, Cookie Crisp, Goya foods and other big brands. I created the "slogans" and tunes, hired the musicians, booked the studio recording time and produced the complete :30 TV commercial. Piano For beginning piano students who are children, I usually start with my own lesson sheets I composed. I also entertain kids by having them color and draw notes and scales. After being familiar with fundamentals, depending on students progress, I recommend them to study with Hal Leonard's or Alfred's.
