Some students were getting good on the beginning methods and understanding what the music book is going to read and learn about. I encourage the students to practice the beginning methods seriously for about 30 minutes. If the student is getting a little hard, she can take a break for 10 minutes and go back to the homework. For classical and opera singing, I teach a healthy Bel Canto technique rooted in the Italian school of singing. I am also skilled in teaching SOVT style, but I typically avoid it with beginning singers. For musical theater and pop, I teach healthy belting techniques that preserve vocal quality and focus on a connection to the chest and body, alleviating vocal tension. For my guitar students, I teach fingering techniques and basic chords first, and then I focus on giving each student a basic repertoire--several pieces they already know and like to showcase their abilities and track progress. I use different book series, depending on the age and level of the student. For young students, I start with the little Mozarts book series, lesson books, and workbooks. For older students, I will either use Bastien or Alfreds lesson and workbooks. This is mixed with a classical and folk book. We also work on theory, and making sure we know our intervals. I began piano study at the age of 5 and began teaching privately at a young age.  I have taught piano and been staff accompanist at Chatham College in Pittsburgh, Pa. and Fairmont State University in Fairmont, W.Va.  I am a member of: Music Teachers Association of California, Music Teachers' National Association, National Guild of Piano Teachers, American Guild of Organists, AFM, Local 47.  She is a founding teacher for the Carnegie Hall Royal Conservatory:  The Achievement Program.  I adjudicate for MTAC, MTNA, NGPT, SYMF and other California festivals and competitions.  I present lecture/recitals on women composers and their music at a variety of conferences throughout the United States and had the privilege of premiering the First Piano Sonata by Nancy Van de Vate at the 2001 Amalfi Music Festival in Italy.
