Using either The Music Tree or My First Piano Adventures, I teach children about the elements of music and how to appreciate music, before going into actual technical work on the piano. I also encourage performances and for those, I let students choose works (classical, romantic, contemporary, jazz, or pop) based on skill level and personal interest. My initial lesson with the student will involve gauging the interests and skill level of the student, as well as determining what motivates him/her and creates excitement about music. Thereafter, I choose one or two method books which seem to best fit the student's ability level and contain exercises and short etudes which will maintain the student's interest and motivation.
