Overview:

I am an educator and musician with many vast and varied experiences in the field, from performing as a drummer in popular music groups, to instructing students individually and in groups from the time I was 16 years old. I began my college studies at Eastern Michigan University, becoming a member of the United States Military Academy Band at West Point after my junior year. While at West Point I completed my bachelor's degree at the State University of New York and a Master's in Music Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. The highlights of my performance experience include performing for the Queen of England at the Waldorf Astoria while a member of the USMA Band, and touring Italy with the University of Georgia Chamber Orchestra..

EXPERIENCE
I  have taught students individually and in sectionals and drumlines, allowing me to gain experience in the instruction of both classical and popular music styles. This has allowed me to hone my skills in integrating styles, as well as tailoring my instruction to the student's particular interests and needs.ter graduation, My greatest pleasure as an instructor is watching a student use the skills I have taught to develop his or her own unique "voice" and means of expression on the instrument, whether it be drumset, concert percussion, or piano.
METHODS USED
My initial lesson with the student will involve gauging the interests and skill level of the student, as well as determining what motivates him/her and creates excitement about music. Thereafter, I choose one or two method books which seem to best fit the student's ability level and contain exercises and short etudes which will maintain the student's interest and motivation. I also stay attuned to the student's preferred musical styles, and incorporate techniques that will best serve the music that they prefer to play.
LESSON STYLE
I feel that I can develop a great rapport with students, and am able to relate to their musical interests no matter what their preferred style(s). Due to the extensive and varied experience I have gained, I am able to develop exercises and choose materials that are relevant to each individual student's needs and goals. My greatest reward is seeing my students gain confidence and the passion for making music that I have known throughout my life. I like to keep the lesson fun and lighthearted, while making sure the required attention by the student is maintained in order to achieve the lesson goals.
