Vocal: I meet students where they are, working on some repertoire they select while throwing in some of my own selections. My students generally focus on vowel shape, vocal placement, breathing technique, and expanding range through knowledge of the head, chest, and mix voices (including belting). During my undergraduate degree, I gave some piano lessons to a next door neighbor, and also also tutored my professor's daughter in music theory. Those moments were crucial for developing what I want to be doing: infusing music lessons with music theory and composition. My teaching style is light and fun and geared to the temperament of the child and the specific goals of the parent. My methods are traditional pedagogy. With younger students under the age of 5 and special needs students I make use of tactical manipulatives for example play doh to assist with fine motor skills. And once student has progressed to have a skill, then I suggest some of easy solo repertoire appropriate or sometimes I made my own piece for them. For teenager and adults, I normally try to find out what they want to play and interested, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level.
