For all of my students, I find out what they are interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly. I typically start with the Piano Adventures series and my own compositions. Once my students understand the fundamentals, I begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first performance or competition. My teaching experience started at age 12 with Alesia Byrd Johnson. I worked with toddlers and as they aged I would continue in their classes while adding the next group of children. Since then I have taught private lessons in homes, studios, private schools, and after graduating from Michigan State University- I taught public school orchestra, band, and choir from Prek-12 in Michigan and then Georgia. My methods to teaching beginners piano is very logical in that it the fundamentals I teach build upon each other. You can think of if like a pyramid. On the bottom of the pyramid we start with the notes of the piano. By the end of lesson one it is my goal for the student to know the name of every single note on the 88-key piano/keyboard.
