As students all have different tastes and skill levels, it is important for me to really be perceptive to their specific needs and teach them only what I feel they will be able to digest but at the same time present a new challenge to them that can be fun. It is my priority to make the lessons relaxed and most importantly, enjoyable. Music is difficult, and takes a lot of work, but it can also be so gratifying and liberating at the same time, and that's what I want my students to understand. Read More

My approach is always to encourage a student to stop using language like that was bad or that sucked. Its not the best or most productive way of getting you freer and singing with less tension or nerves. What I look to motivate in a student is becoming aware of any tension or nerves and explore where it comes from. Become an analyst. Oh, I just my chin out everytime I have to sing an E vowel really high on the staff. Read More
Instruments: Voice
I encourage my voice students to be well rounded musicians and help them with their piano and accompanying skills, aural studies, composition and sight reading in addition to assist them their vocal technique and overcoming any vocal issues they may be experiencing. I have studied many contemporary vocal styles and techniques and assist students with reaching their full potential. I am always researching into new techniques and practices to stay on top of my instrument and also because I am passionate about voice and teaching others! Read More

I think being well rounded is important with music and one thing that I've noticed is building on what the student is interested in. Started off with materials builds important fundamentals, but if my student is nodding off to sleep, then I'm not doing my job. I'll begin by setting a goal and seeing what the student is interested in (i.e. what band/song would they like to learn about?) From there, I'll set a realistic goal (Flight of the Bumblebee can't and shouldn't be the first song on guitar that you learn) and we'll learn the techniques, structure, and music theory that exists in a certain song. Instruments: Violin Viola Fiddle Music
My first violin student started with me 9 years ago during my undergraduate studies in Utah. I realized that teaching is much different than performing and started taking classes to be a better instructor. I grew up studying the Suzuki books and have registered Violin Teacher Training Units 1-4 with the Suzuki Association of the Americas. In college, I studied Violin Pedagogy with the esteemed pedagogue Dr. Kasia Sokol-Borup who demonstrated how to enhance the Suzuki method with other styles of teaching. Read More

And so, my reading aloud began. I read to each class, five or six classes each year. It was a great way for me to get to know the students. For a time, I was their teacher. And, with PTO financial support we purchased a copy of Trelease's book for our teachers. This PTO support became a standard practice where funds were yearly budgeted for professional books and support materials for our teachers to enhance school based professional development. Read More
