Instruments: Violin Viola
Its my greatest pleasure to help children and adults alike succeed and improve! In 1990 I first began learning violin and i never stopped since. I graduated from UNC-SA through both their highschool and collegiate programs. After earning my violin performance degree I continued to travel around the United States and Japan, teaching violin everywhere i went. When i returned in 2015, I joined the Durham Symphony and started performing with various symphonies throughout North Carolina. Read More
Instruments: Trumpet
My experience teaching dates back to my late years of high school, as I began teaching private lessons 3 years ago to younger classmates, and students at the local junior high. I am now currently teaching multiple students throughout the Piedmont triad area as well as online Skype lessons in trumpet fundamentals, classical and jazz. Encouraging and establishing a daily routine is a major element in progressing a students ability on their prospective instrument as well as forming a bond and passion for the music. Read More
Instruments: Drums
I have been teaching music full-time for eighteen years. Primarily, I founded and led the Enrichment Center Percussion Ensemble (ECPE), a truly unique and acclaimed group. Our focus was on active music-making, performance, and recording. The group made three professional recordings, performed widely, and challenged audience expectations everywhere they did. Privately, I have taught drumming to many individuals, from young students just starting out, to professional musicians looking to add drums to their instrumental repertoire, to people needing help overcoming sensory issues. I aim to help students enjoy practicing, whatever level they are at. This means lessons will be tailored to each student's interest, while still following a structured progression to help them gradually advance. All students will be guided through long tones, scales, technical studies, etudes, and solo pieces. Students at higher levels may also include orchestral excerpts. We will also discuss how to properly warm up the body and breath, so that practicing can be as healthy as possible and not result in any injuries or discomfort. Read More
Instruments: Piano
Since beginning piano lessons myself when I was seven, I have been sharing my love of music with everyone all around me. I've been teaching lessons formally for the two years since I left college, and it has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Working with new students is always such a humbling experience, because it challenges me as a teacher to approach old problems with a fresh perspective. Read More
Instruments: Piano Guitar Harmonica Recorder Keyboard
My choices in books and other resources for the student are based primarily on the students' individual goals, needs, and interests. Generally, I approach the subject matter with firm but relaxed expectations, giving the students freedom but also requiring them to pursue a specified goal. This may include allowing the student to take a break from a challenging piece if necessary, to let their mind calm down and refocus while they practice a different piece with different requirements. Instruments: Violin
Numerous violin teachers make one of two mistakes. Many give their students too little information, leaving the student to figure out the finer technical details on their own, while others feed the student too much information without breaking it down for them. In both cases the student progresses at a slower pace and is likely to become frustrated. My approach is much more step-by-step oriented, allowing the student to fully grasp a concept over the course of one lesson as opposed to several lessons, which results in significantly greater progress over time.
