My goal with each student is to specialize each lesson to each student's needs and give students the tools to be able to play the music they enjoy. For all of my students, both children and adults, I incorporate theory, technique, ear training, and musicality into the lessons. If the student is interested in jazz, I typically use Jim Snidero's "Jazz Conception" books as a great starting place to learn about interpreting jazz music as well as a basis for starting to talk about improvisation. Continuing from there, jazz students will start to learn jazz "standards" from the Great American Songbook and discussions of improvisation will go deeper. Nothing is more important to me than seeing my students develop their passion for drums and music in general.I think its essentially to go at his/hers own pace. And encounrage each to reach their goal for that lesson. Acknowledging when the student is progressing, attentive and eager to keep on learning.
