For beginning piano students, I often get them started with the Faber piano series, then incorporate music theory along with their song requests. For beginning fretted string students (guitar/bass/ukelele), I like to start with the Hal Leonard method book to get started with reading notation, so that we cover more than just tabs and chords. For drum/percussion students, I'll have them start with a combination of Syncopation by Ted Reed and Peter Erksine's Drumset Essentials Volume 1. Read More

My name is Joseph. I am a professional performer/teacher located in Hopewell New Jersey county of Mercer. I began studying music at the age of 9. I took up the accordion, then graduated to the console organ and eventually on to the piano/keyboard. I am very much hands on when it comes to teaching. I started at a very early age of 9. I'm very passionate about my art and love to see growth in everyone I teach! I push my students to strive for success, but at the same time my lessons are very relaxed and fun. Besides working on weekly selections, we will listen to examples, talk about a variety of topics including technique, musicianship, theory (primarily jazz lessons), as well as play duets and improvise together (jazz lessons). It's a complete auditory, visual, kinesthetic, and tactile learning experience from the ground up. Read More
Instruments: Piano Drums Latin Percussion
When teaching a novice student the drums it is extremely important to note that learning the drums is not an overnight affair. The amount of practice needed for thorough syncopation is not to be slept on. HOWEVER, I genuinely believe once a student hits that learning curve where their arms and legs have "minds of their own" there is an infinite amount of progress that can be made after. I always say music is fun and it should always be whether the student is practicing rudiments, or legitimately playing to pieces from Glen Miller's Orchestra all the way up to Michael Jackson. I've discovered over the years that every student is different and require a custom approach tailored to what method works best for them. Some students do very well working through publications of lesson books, while others seem to do better with a less structured approach driven more by listening and muscle memory. In both methods, I find it important to lead by example, not only to be able to show them correctly, but also to inspire them. Read More
Instruments: Voice
If I were to describe my teaching approach in a few words, those words would be fun, flexibility, patience, and excitement. When a student has a breakthrough with their singing, confidence, their self- or kinesthetic awareness, whatever it may be, I get so excited; it is really cool to see the look on a student's face and hear the excitement in their voice when they really "get" something! For me and as experienced by most of my students, voice lessons are about so much more than just learning to sing.
